Fob Watches and Vintage Fashion

Fob watches are associated with a certain vintage charm. The practicality of fob watches means they are widely associated with nurses. But the fashion world has seen a revival of the fob watch and Guess watches. Fob watches clipped to a jacket, waistcoat or nurse's uniform can denote anytime from the 16th century to the Victorian era and up to World War One. And the popularity of fob watches today shows how the fashion world often recycles and reclaims trends from the past. Fob watches, unlike wrist watches that became popular after the First World War, could feature a decorative chain, or ornaments (known as a fob). The fob watch is generally seen as an extension of the pocket watch. And perhaps there have been some unlikely figureheads for the fob watch trend – including David Tenant's Doctor Who! But fob watches and pocket watches are routinely used in movies and TV as they work as a visual shorthand to indicate passing time or time running out.

Fashion and design can be timeless, and in the case of fob watches the trend represents a recognition of the archaic beauty demonstrated in fob watches. The vintage trend is huge, but it shouldn't be surprising. The fashion world has always had a knack of plummeting the past, picking up the gems, and re-polishing them for today's style aficionados. Fob watches can add a little glamour or a little fun to your look (depending on what style of fob watch you wear) rather than the staid, sometimes boring wristwatch.

Fob Watches and Pocket Watches Through Time

Traditionally, women embraced fob watches preferring them to the wristwatch which was considered more 'manly'. Women tended to wear fob watches with decorative overtones, men opted for pocket watches that fitted into waistcoats. But a man wearing pocket watches now would be considered to be making a fashion statement, declaring himself as something of a cad or a romantic. Although pocket watches did have a revival in the late 1970s when three-piece suits came back in vogue, showing fashion always recycles and repeats itself. Pocket watches, although once widely worn by men became more 'feminine' after the first world war when soldiers adopted to wristwatches because they were simply more practical.
Perhaps that's why pocket watches are associated with men often stereotyped in film as 'cads' or 'dandies'. For women, the fob watch can work in the same way as any piece of statement jewellery, adding a feminine charm and unique style.
